Sarasota Young Voices

Young Voices will be performing at the November 19th church service

The Bee Ridge Presbyterian Church is proud to sponsor an exciting new music program for all children

which will be conducted by Ms Genevieve Beauchamp.

About Sarasota Young Voices

Sarasota Young Voices is a youth choir whose purpose is to enable children to make beautiful music together, provide a welcoming environment for children to enjoy each other, and allow the children to serve others while at the same time increasing their self confidence.

The choir will serve others in our community in differing ways.  The SYV has grown out of the Bee Ridge Presbyterian Church Children’s Choir, and is hosted through the generosity of the Church.  SYV will continue to participate in worship services once a month, giving the children an opportunity to offer their music to God and to give thanks for the blessings in their lives through song.

SYV will reach out to the community with song by performing in nursing homes. The music at these performances is truly enjoyed and appreciated, and through this experience, children will discover the joys of giving.

Lastly, the singers will perform for their own benefit.  They will prepare a variety of repertoire and work all year to develop a beautiful sound through quality education. They will be featured on different programs throughout the year that will contribute to their sense of accomplishment.

By keeping costs to a very minimum (minimal registration fee), the choir is ensuring that children from any background can participate.  Music should be a part of every child’s life.

Weekly Rehearsals

Rehearsals are held on Wednesdays,  from 5:30-6:45.

Students should arrive 10 minutes early and promptly sign in, get their pencil and music folder and be in their seat 5 minutes before rehearsal begins.

A folder with the child’s name will be placed at the sign-in table, and it is the child’s responsibility to look every week to see whether there are papers to take home.  It should be done at the end of the rehearsal when the children are signing out.

No gum or toys should be brought to rehearsal.  The room must remain free of distractions.

Children need to be respectful of others at all times.  SYV is a place where children feel comfortable to express themselves while receiving encouraging words.

Leaving the rehearsal room must be done promptly and quietly.  This is very important as the adult choir will be arriving to begin their rehearsal.  For the same reason, parents must be prompt in picking up their children.  Children and parents will exit the choir room through the acolyte room, located next to the choir room.  A parent volunteer will check children out as they leave the room.

Behavior:  Children will be treated with respect, and should treat others with respect at all times.  A positive atmosphere is key to good and relaxed singing.  Behavioral issues will be addressed quickly to maintain a good environment.

If a child begins to display behavioral issues during a rehearsal, he or she will be moved to a different chair.  If a second warning needs to be issued, the child will be asked to sit out for a while.  The behavior will be addressed between the parent, the child and the director if needed.

Good behavior is the key to everyone’s enjoyment of the experience.  With this in mind, the director reserves the right to end the participation of disruptive children in the choir.

Some Organizational Notes:

SYV Terms of Agreement:

While there is practically no cost to be a member of the choir other than the $25.00 registration fee, and the cost of their uniform, there are still some important guidelines to establish.  Parents and singers must agree to follow some simple rules to ensure the success of Sarasota Young Voices.

Children must be present at all rehearsals and performances.   Schedule conflicts must be addressed in writing, preferably through email communication.  Three excused absences will be allowed over the course of the year.  If more absences are necessary,  a meeting will be arranged between the director and the parents to discuss possible options.

Volunteering. It is our intention to keep membership dues low so as to enable participation for children from all backgrounds.   Therefore, parents will be asked to volunteer in different areas such as: bringing snacks, uniform checks, chaperoning for different events, fundraisers, and other activities that will help in the smooth operation of the choir.

Sunday Services.   Children of all faiths are welcome to participate in SYV.  This group exists in large part due to the generosity and encouragement of Bee Ridge Presbyterian Church and its Pastor, Dr. Karl Kling.  The children benefit from being able to use the choir room for rehearsals, the sanctuary for performances and we will also use Albritton Center for fun activities.

The choir will sing as part of the Sunday service about once a month. After finishing singing, the children will be invited to remain in the sanctuary with their parents or may join the other children for Children’s Church.  Two chaperones will escort the children out of the church if they wish to participate in the Children’s Church part of the service.  Other parents should remain seated until the end of the service.
