A Mysterious Mouse
For many years the most
popular and entertaining column in the Bee Kirk Bugle was written by our
church Mouse who cleverly redported the comings and goings of Bee Ridge
members. Could it be ????? Dare we hope ????? Maybe we are going to be blessed with another Church Mouse!!! Stay tuned........

"Yep! The church
Mouse is back!! I'm seein' all kinds of neat things to pass on to you. Look for me in the October Bugle"

A
Message from Vince Vance
Chairman of the Worship Committee
|
APPLAUSE In the course of human events, we find that not everyone sees and interprets things in the same way. We find this in all aspects of life including worship. As the chairperson of the Worship Committee at Bee Ridge Presbyterian, I have been approached by several members of the congregation who have had concerns regarding recent happenings during the worship service on Sunday. We are very fortunate here at Bee Ridge because we have some very talented people who use their talents very effectively in our worship services. Sometimes we desire to show our appreciation of these talents during the service. At times we show this appreciation in the form of applause. Now, some of a more traditional bent believe that the worship service is a sacred event dedicated to the worship of God and our Savior, Jesus Christ and that anything that happens during that service is for the glorification of God and any outward form of appreciation, such as applause, adds a secular element to the service and detracts from it. On the other hand, there are those that feel restrained and constricted in their worship because they feel unable to express their joy in the glorification of the Lord when they cannot applaud. What a conundrum! How do we address this without offending any of our friends and fellow worshippers? I brought this issue to the Worship Committee for discussion and fortunately Dr. Jonathan Spivey was in attendance at that meeting. Jonathan stated that while he appreciates applause at secular performances, he is sometimes uncomfortable when it happens in the worship service because he is not performing but playing for the glory of God and does not expect nor require applause from the congregation. He suggested that if someone felt really moved by something they heard or saw during a worship service, they could show their appreciation by personally thanking the person after the service. The committee felt it would be good to get the advice of our worship leader, so a few days later I had the opportunity to discuss this with Pastor Karl Kling. Karl's concern is that we do not alienate anyone during our worship service and we strive to make it an experience where everyone can feel comfortable with our celebration of Faith and our love of God. Therefore, we agreed that I would write this letter to be submitted through the Worship Committee and the Session and should it be approved, distributed through the Bugle. So, after much discussion, I came up with the following statement that should help us all to have a meaningful worship experience: We should keep in mind the sacred nature of the worship service and its intent to bring us all closer to our Lord and that the things we see and hear are not performances for our benefit but expressions of our Faith and to glorify His name. Does this mean that we have to be rigid in our worship and unable to express our faith in a more public manner, such as applause? No! If the Spirit truly moves you to express your faith in an outward way, then by all means do it. However, if your expression is for the appreciation of a beautiful piece of music or a moving word, then express your gratitude personally to that person after the service. I'm sure they will find more joy from that than applause during the worship service. Some may ask, "How do I tell the difference?" The Spirit will move you from your heart and your response will be spontaneous and without forethought. So go out and get closer to God during worship and remember to respect its sacred nature, but if the Spirit moves you - show it! God bless you all! Respectfully submitted, Vince A. Vance, Worship Committee Chair

Healing Prayer Ministry Submitted by Dottie Halliday "Are any of you sick? You should call for the elders of the church to come and pray over you, anointing you with oil in the name of the Lord." (James 5:14 & 15) We are fortunate here at Bee Ridge Presbyterian to offer just such a ministry after both the 8:30 and ll:00AM services each Sunday. These elders and trained prayer partners are available to offer individual prayer for any concern: be it physical, emotional, or spiritual. The requests they enjoy most are when someone comes to them and asks for a prayer of thanksgiving or gratitude for their previous prayers being answered. All requests are strictly confidential. Like with many of the groups here at Bee Ridge, this is a small group of dedicated individuals who would like to grow. We are looking for some additional support from interested individuals to "lighten — the — load" of our team.
********** The Holy Spirit has answered many of our requests. We would hope that the next time you have a challenge or need in your life you would avail yourself of our services.
And in addition...... We offer "The Prayer Chain" Prayer requests for the Prayer Chain can be made anytime during the week by calling Jean Newcombe-Dalo at home (379-0271). The Prayer & Share group meets on Thursday mornings at 10:00 AM. They meet together to pray for one hour for all those on the chain and for all other prayer requests that have been made known to the group. You only need to show up, ready to pray, to be part. We give thanks that we can bring all requests for help to our Father in heaven.

Did You Know?
Historian's Report Submitted by Julia Keys Williams
DID YOU KNOW? Submitted by Julia Williams No matter where he lived. Dr. Walter K. Keys always had a vegetable garden. In the early 60's at Bee Ridge, his garden was behind the manse. That would be about where the parking lot in front of the Little White Church is now. His specialty was broccoli and several kinds of squash. From the Church Mouse in May of 1961: "Somethin’ else that's of interest to me is the preacher's vegetable garden—his pride and joy. I've been wantin’ to tell you about it ever since he first turned over the dirt and put in a few seeds. He never says so, but I think he's been a farmer from way back, for I ain't never seen a smaller piece of ground produce such a variety and such an abundance of good things. Didja notice that I ain't sed much about me havin' a lean and hungry look lately. I'd be plain stupid to go hungry with such a garden 'round. An' y' know, he ain't a bit stingy with it, either. Fact is, he's always givin' something to someone. Boy, is he proud of that garden—he's right to be proud. When I get to be a man, I'm gonna have me a garden, too." And from the mid 50's. we learn that the Rev. David Pittie had a passion for his flower garden. The Church Mouse speaking in May, 1955: "By the way, all you good people— Won't you please keep off the preacher's petunias. He goes about ravin' and rantin' every time your ham-footed so and so's step into his nice flower garden. It's really his pride and joy, and he wishes you'd all keep on the straight and narrow path around the manse (anyway, it'll give you good practice) and that's what pathways are for—thought you knew that." Fond Memories by Julia

KEEP THE INSPIRATIONAL LITERATURE COMING! |
Recently Libye Larance ( our Prison
Ministry
expert in Peace River Presbytery) came by Bee
Ridge to pick up the religious literature we have been collecting for her. We
took three boxes of books to the Presbyterian Women Gathering at Northminster
Presbyterian, where Libye was the speaker for their program that
day. As she
did
when she spoke at a Bee Ridge Gathering,
she introduced Sue Berger with her "Beyond Jail
Ministry"" and two of the former prison
inmates Sue works with. Sue is allowed by the Sarasota Country authorities to
go into the jail
and teach a
Bible class to the
incarcerated girls/women. But Sue goes above
and beyond the call
of duty. When some of the girls are
released from jail, she takes them into her home for a period of transition and rehabilitation. All of her seven
children do not
still live at home; some have
grown up, so she has room to do this.
The testimony of the two girls she
brought to the meeting was heart-wrenching.
They expressed gratitude for the books we took to them.
Also, Sue said she needs spiritual literature
written in Spanish, so if anyone has
Spanish inspirational material, it
would be most welcome.
Thanks for bringing the books, magazines, and other material. Let's keep up the good work!
